Antique Middle Eastern Persian style wool runner rug carpet
A look at weaving in the 19th and 20th centuries
Caucasian fabric of the past 180 years is a complicated issue. There is an extraordinary multiplicity of influences in the area, culture, ethnography, politics, religion, the geography and climate have influenced every rug weaving in the region. In recent years, the high quality of the study has caused much carpet weaving in this area and there is now a well-organized body of scholarship.
In general, the designs and colors Caucasian carpets are not in themselves sufficient to determine the origin with absolute certainty. There are, of course, some particularly well-documented designs have been traced to its origin, but that is only a small part of the exceptionally wide range of designs found in tissues of the Caucasus. The only important factor to determine the regions where they originate specific carpet is the type of wool used and the battery life. heavy wool carpets are good insulators and sheep breed in the mountainous districts heavier, and have already shaggier fleece that bred in the lowlands. The carpets woven in the mountain villages have a richer, longer and heavier the battery, and its colors tend to be hotter. Thus, the areas that produce long-piled rugs are Kazak, Gendje, Lezgin, and several varieties of Karabakh sized batteries are in Talish, Lenkoran tissues and Dagestan, and the stack rather low in Shirvan, Baku, Kuba and carpets.
Regarding the proliferation of designs, there are about 350 different tribes in the area, speaking about 150 dialects. The south-west, on the Armenia-Kazakhstan area is populated by Armenian Christians in the south-east of the Mongols and the Tatars down Persians, on the north, the principal tribes are the Shirvans, Dagestans, Chechens and Lesghis, and the sound of Northwest Cherkess (Circassians).
There are, of course, cultural and ethnic overlap in all these areas. To give an idea of the difficulty in assigning design individuals in specific places, the Russian scholar S. Zerminov, in his study Azerbaijan Carpets, gave the names of 123 villages in the south and mid-Caucacus which produced carpets distinctive design. For all the Caucacus, would probably have to multiply this figure by a factor of at least four. Many of the reasons animals schematic found in the tissues of the Caucasus go back centuries, and are probably of Scythian origin.
For convenience, it is possible to divide the Caucacus weaving in ten areas: Kazak, Karabagh, Gendje, Talish, Moghan, Shirvan, Baku, Kuba, Daghestan and Derbend. It should be noted, however, that the Kazak generic name is often applied to a wide range of carpets from the Caucasus, which have not necessarily been woven in the Kazak district.
Chelaberd rugs are often referred to as Eagle Kazaks. Although the design of these carpets show affinity with Kazak rugs, structurally, are unquestionably Karabakh. The companies that use heavy thread in these two fields creates a superficial similarity to the weaving patterns of the two types. The products in this area have one of the few tissues in the Caucasus distinctive, consisting of two weft threads after every other row of knots. The Kazakhs, on the other hand, everyone seems to have an irregular number of frames, two to four, after each row of knots.
Carpet Chelaberd were made in the Caucasus to the southeast, on the northern Persia. The Caucasus mountain range stretches from the Caspian to the Black Sea Area in Azerbaijan today and southern Russia, and in the villages of these mountains that some of the most collectible rugs originated.
The carpets and rugs to collect most part of this area are those that weave between 1800 and 1900. The nineteenth century is the last goodbye of the village and nomadic carpets. In the twentieth century, no longer used natural dyes, and designs and fabrics were much less attractive. Chelaberd carpets were mainly made in the traditional sizes such as 4 'x 6' and 5 'x 7' ... corridors of this size are rarely wove in this tribal village. As a result, brokers are very desirable Chelaberd and highly sought after by collectors.
The best carpets from the Caucasus in the nineteenth century village shows the inventiveness of the cottage weavers who created stylized versions of traditional design elements and uses local materials to their best advantage. During this time, the use of natural dyes was an art still practiced, resulting in bright colors. Design motifs such as sunshine medallions, dragons, and the arches of the temple appear in many of the best carpets people.
The origin of the name "Eagle Kazak" has several explanations. The design medallion in the center of the carpet is known as an eagle design. There is some similarity between these medallions of Russia and the two-headed eagle. The other (Less accepted) theory comes from the definition of Chelaberd yes. Some say that Chelaberd means eagle in the local dialect, a mixture of Armenian, Russian and Arabic.
